ASMS Cleft Course: Download Course Brochure ASMS Cleft Course

This program will provide a review of surgical cleft care. Additional information regarding perioperative management and challenges related to providing medical and surgical care in and underdeveloped environment will also be comprehensively discussed.

Intended Audience:
This course is intended for plastic surgeons and other physicians, surgeons, and ancillary allied health care workers that plan to sign up for an overseas mission trip

Overview:
Cleft lip/palate (CLP) consists of a spectrum of congenital defects involving the upper lip and the hard and soft palate. CLP affects millions of children and adults globally. This disorder adversely affects the child’s appearance, speech, dentition, alimentation, and hearing. Therefore, this plays a significant adverse role in normal social development. CLP has been described as the second most commonly occurring congenital anomaly after club foot. Incidence is higher within children of Asian, Latino, or Native American descent, occurring in countries possessing the best number of trained plastic surgeons and available resources.

Learning Objectives:
Following completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the abnormal and normal anatomy of cleft lip, palate, and nose.
  • Apply the basic anatomy to perform improved cleft techniques.
  • Summarize patient safety issues when embarking on overseas mission trips.
  • Incorporate the new information obtained to avoid untoward sequelae.
  • Apply this knowledge to the management of secondary cleft deformities.
