The members of the Society are surgeons of high moral and ethical standing and professional attainment, who hold both the MD and DDS or DMD degrees, or only the MD degree, and who fulfill the membership requirements. |
ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP
Active members are surgeons actively engaged in the practice of maxillofacial and craniofacial surgery who are citizens of, and reside in, the United States or Canada.
General Requirements
An active member must:
- Complete 5 years recognized graduate training in preparation for maxillofacial surgery.
- Be sponsored by an Active or Senior Member, and endorsed by a second Active or Senior Member.
- Be engaged in the practice of surgery in the same geographical area for a minimum of one year prior to proposal.
Required Documentation
The following must be submitted to the Chairman of the Membership Committee:
- Completed application form.
- Separate letters/forms of sponsorship from both sponsors.
- Six copies of curriculum vitae.
- Verification of attendance at one annual meeting.
INTERNATIONAL MEMBERSHIP
International members are surgeons of high moral and ethical standing from outside the territorial limits of the United States and Canada who are actively engaged in the practice of maxillofacial surgery. To be considered for the International membership, an individual must be proposed in writing by any Active or Senior member. The proposer sends the Membership Chairman a curriculum vitae including the name, address, education, formal training, hospital affiliation with official titles, together with such other information as may be pertinent. The International applicant will then be invited to the Annual Meeting of the ASMS. Following attendance at the Annual Meeting, the applicant must complete a full application as for Active membership. Individual approved by the Membership Committee and the Board of Trustees are then submitted for vote by the full membership. International members shall pay an application fee and dues. They enjoy all the privileges of the Society except for those of voting and holding office.
ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP
Associate members are individuals who have contributed to the understanding and treatment of disorders and/or trauma of the craniomaxillofacial region. Associate membership is considered to be an honor bestowed by the Society.
Associate members are individuals of high moral, ethical, and professional competence. They may be from another medical specialty, profession scientific, or paramedical field which is directly related to craniomaxillofacial surgery. There is no citizenship requirement.
Consideration for Associate membership requires sponsorship by two Active or Senior members of ASMS who are familiar with the applicant's contributions to craniomaxillofacial surgery. The sponsors propose the individual to the Membership Committee which sends its own recommendation to the Board of Trustees. If approved by the Board, the individual's name is submitted for vote by the full membership.
Associate members pay an initiation fee as well as annual dues. They are required to attend one Annual Meeting every three years. They may not serve on committees, vote, or hold office in the Society.
CANDIDATE FOR MEMBERSHIP
Candidates for Membership shall be surgeons with the M.D. degree who are of high moral and ethical standing who are actively engaged in the practice of maxillofacial surgery, who are citizens of, and reside in, the United States or Canada. An individual may remain a candidate for membership until ABMS (or equivalent) Board certified or for a maximum of five years.
Completion of a minimum of five (5) years of recognized graduate training in preparation for maxillofacial surgery, and attendance at the ASMS "Basic Course," shall be prerequisites. Candidate must be ABMS eligible (or the equivalent).
To be considered for standing as a candidate for Membership, the individual shall request an appropriate application form for completion. The completed application must be endorsed and signed by an Active or Senior member.
The Membership Committee shall review the application and credentials of an applicant and if such a review is positive shall grant the applicant the status of Candidate for Membership. When Candidates for Membership believe that they have met the requirements for Active Membership, they shall submit a completed Active membership application, with appropriate accompanying documentation. No new processing fee will be required.
Candidates for membership shall pay an application fee and dues as determined by the Board of Trustees.
